Ukraine

Well, you really need these earrings in Ukraine colors because the proceeds of your purchase will be donated to Global Empowerment Mission. This organization arrived in Medyka, along the Ukrainian-Polish border with 2 days of the start of the crisis. They are providing Aid to Ukraine using your donation to import and purchase food, water, basic necessity, medicine and medical equipment needed in a war zone. These supplies are handed off to partners who delivers aid to cities like Kiev. Your donations also provide much need help with refugee relocation, war-zone evacuation, stable housing, and non-Ukrainian refugees. A New Day

It is difficult to emphasize the cultural and historical impact of jewelry over time. During prehistoric times people adorned themselves with items found in their environment such as shells to signify fertility and motherhood. On the other hand, many cultures used coveted precious stones and gems as jewelry to be considered a status symbol and only the very affluent wore it. During the pre-colonization era of United States, Indigenous populations were without a written language so they used the visual display of jewelry worn as a form of communication and expression.   The art form of making jewelry has been handed down to succeeding generations as in post-colonial times, cultural identity became an important aspect of personal and tribal survival.  The layered and rich stories that American/Alaskan Indian jewelry gives rise to is particularly meaningful as many tribes were forced to convert to Christianity and the U.S. government shamefully prohibited the pract...

Past (Update)

A million years ago I worked in a LA design school as a placement coordinator assisting graduates with getting internships or employment with designers.   I was in my very early thirties and the job barely registered a blip on my overall career trajectory.  It did not last long because I veered into the non-profit social service world where I felt I really belonged.  I would, after the age of 40, receive a BS and MPA and make my career home at a small private non-profit organization providing advocacy for older adults. Secretly though, I think about what would happened if I stayed.  Could I be a stylist or a fashion assistant or editor?   I'll never know.   I love this interview with Lucinda Chambers , decades long fashion director at British Vogue.  She really has no love for bull-shittery which I imagine makes up for about ninety-eight percent of the fashion industry.   If I were to have had a career in fashion this is the ty...

Statement

Just for fun, I attempted to recreate a beautiful Mara Hoffman necklace I found on Pinterest .  This statement piece has some imperfections (i.e., broken bead, stray threads) but I still love and wear it frequently.   My recreation is at top with green and black glass bead necklace chain with the original piece directly below.   xo, S

Inspired

As being new to the jewelry design business, I was unaware of the the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.   This truth-in-advertising law prohibits misrepresentation in marketing American Indian or Alaska Native arts and culture in the United States.  So basically you cannot market or sell any product falsely claiming to be an Indian product, or a product of a Indian Tribe or Indian arts.  This law covers all Indian and Indian style contemporary and traditional arts and crafts produced after 1935. Because American Indian or Alaska Native designs and style is so prevalent in society, especially in the handmade crafting/jewelry industry, this act will honor the historical significance of Indian and Indian-style arts and crafts. Now if a law could be created to ensure every bad piece of clothing is not labeled "vintage" at Etsy, that would be great.  The Tommy Hilfiger purse you bought at Ross in 1999 is in no way vintage. Please admire my American Indian Inspired...
